This print has been in storage since 1967 and has slight discolorations around the print border which does not distract from the beauty of the print and would be easily covered up when matted and framed.
Tulloch was champion racehorse of the late 50s, early 60s He was purchased at the Trentham Yearling Sales in New Zealand in 1956, for 750 guineas. The bay colt was sired by the imported sire Khorassan out of the mare Florida.
As a three year old, Tulloch won 14 races and was placed twice from 16 starts including the 1957 Caulfield Cup in near world record time. In 1957, Tulloch beat Phar Lap’s record time in the AJC Derby by more than 2 seconds.
Whilst spelling in 1958, Tulloch contracted a mysterious stomach complaint that saw the champion fighting for his life. For almost two years he battled the recurring infection losing weight and condition. Tulloch finally returned to racing in the VRC Queens Plate on 12th March 1960 where, true to his fighting spirit, he took the lead half way down the straight and won by a short head. The ovation lasted minutes. He went on to win 14 races from 23 more starts culminating in an emotional swansong when he won the 1961 Brisbane Cup.
Tulloch’s record shows he finished out of a place only once in 53 starts – 36 wins, 12 seconds and 4 thirds. Tulloch stood at stud but his feats on the track were not reproduced in his offspring. Tulloch died at Old Gowang Stud near Coonabarabran on 30th June 1969 at 15 years of age.
