Undisputed three-year-old champion until he broke down in the Belmont Stakes, Tim Tam had been heavily favored to give Calumet Farm its third and America its ninth winner of the mythical “Triple Crown” – Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont.
By the great handicap Star Tom Fool out of the brilliant handicap mare Two Lea, Tim Tam made only one start at two, finishing fourth to earn $275.
But at three he won his first two outings, which were followed by a pair of thirds, one of them in the Bahamas Stakes behind his stable mate Kentucky Pride. Then Tim Tam launched into a series of eight straight victories, including the Everglades, Flamingo and Fountain of Youth Stakes, Florida and Kentucky Derbies, Derby Trial and Preakness Stakes, Florida and Kentucky Dervies, Derby Trial and Preakness Stakes. He actually finished second to Jewel’s Reward in the Flamingo, but the latter was disqualified for having bumped the Calumet colt repeatedly. Also included in Tim Tam’s string of successes was a seven-furlong Keeneland record of 1:22 1/5.
Then came the Belmont, ironically his 13th start of the year. At the head of the stretch he was only a length behind the leader and seemed to be moving well. But in the last quarter he broke his right fore sesamoid, although with great courage he finished second on three legs.
An operation at the University of Pennsylvania removed 14 bone fragments. A satisfactory recovery might mean his return to the races in 1959 in an effort to add to his total earnings of $467,475, or it might be decided to retire this splendid colt to stud rather than risk further injury.
