In getting the record earner Bye Bye Byrd, winner of %554,257 and setter of a dozen world records, Poplar Byrd, senior stallion at Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Larkin. Standing at Poplar Hill Farm, Lexington, KY., gained immortality in the harness sport.
But he had already become a noted stallion. He has sired two other members of the $1000,000 class: Senator Byrd, $133,591; and Poplar Bill, $104,461. Through 1961, Poplar Byrd has been credited with 157 standard performers, 154 of them pacers. They included 65 in 2:05 or better, and eight pacers in 2:00 or less. In the latter respect he is the best living son of the great Volomite, 32 of whose sons have transmitted 2:00 speed.
The heritage of Poplar Byrd has already passed on into a second generation, for two of his daughters have produced 2:00 performers.
Poplar Byrd was himself a pacer of toughness and speed, his best record having been 1:59-3/5 at four.
But it is as a sire that the patriarch of Poplar Hill will be best remembered.
