Part of a Portfolio of 8 Harness Champions from Original Paintings.

Meadow Pace p, 2, 2:01; 3, 1:59-3/5, b.h., 1951, by Adios – Leta Long, by Volomite. Owner, S. A. Camp Farms, Inc. Standing at Almahurst Farm, Lexington, KY.

One of the more successful sires of speedy pacers has been S. A. Camp’s Meadow Pace, standing at Almahurst Farm, Lexington, KY.

With 37 registered foals old enough to race through 961, he has had 23 starters. Four have cracked 2:00, a dozen have broken 2:05 and 19 have gone in 2:10, That means that 17.4% of his starters have joined the 2:00 elite, 53.4% have paced in 2:05 and 82.6% have covered the mile in 2:10 or better.

Among his rapid pacers have been King’s Meadow 1:59-4/5; Shafter Rebel 1:59-4/5; Lumber Sis 1:59-4/5; Raceway 1:59-4/5; Pace A Breeze 3, 2:01; Telepace 2:01-2/5; Canny Pace 2:01-3/5; Well Away 3, 2:03-2/5; etc.

Meadow Pace was himself a performer of Speed and class. At two he won the Fox Stake, McMahon Memorial and Ohio Standardbred Futurity. In the McMahon he set his race record for the season of 2:01.

His major victory as a three-year-old came in the Matron Stake, which he took in 1:59-4/5. His race record, though, was 1:59-3/5.

He was retired to stud with total earnings of $60,390.

Besides his fact racing record, he has a speedy pedigree to recommend him. His sire, Adios, is the leading begetter of 2:00 performers in the history of pacing, and stems from the male line most fertile in 2:00 pacers. Meadow Pace’s dam, the great brood mare Leta Long, has produced four 2:00 pacers, including two other successful sires, Tar Heel 1:57 and Keystoner 1:57-4/5. She is a daughter of Volomite, leading broodmare sire in terms of 2:00 performances; and stems from Jessie Pepper family, the leading producer of 2:00 speed.

Since Medow Pace was relatively young, with only four crops to race through in 1961, it was reasonable to suppose he would garner even more sire honors in the future.
