One of the most promising young stallions in the burgeoning Illinois breeding industry is the syndicate-owned *Dormello, whose first foals will reach the races in 1961.
He was one of the top English race horses, winning the 1 ½ mile Stretchworth Stakes and the 1 5/8 mile Mariner’s Stakes at three, and the Four-Year-Old Free Handicap the following season, to collect 1,619 British Pounds. He also ran second in the Zetland Stakes and Melbourn Plate, third in the Great Yorkshire Handicap and fourth in the Wood Ditton Stakes.
Moreover, his pedigree contains some of the “bluest” blood in the equine world. His sire was the unbeaten Italian champion Nearco, leading English sire three times and one of the globe’s most influential stallions. *Dormello’s dam, the Gran Criterium victor and two-year-old champion Donatella, also produced the Italian two – and three-year-old champion *Daumier, now at stud in Kentucky; the second-best Italian two- and three-year-old of his season, Duccio; the Italian St. Leger captor De Dreux; and two other stakes performers. Both of the nest two dams, Delleana and Duccia de Buonsinsegna, accounted for the Italian 1,000 Guineas and Gran Premio d’Italia.
