Owned by Mrs. Charlotte DeVan and driven by Johnny Simpson, Caleb set his seasonal record in a losing cause. His heat in 1:58-1/5 was the fastest of the rich Kentucky Futurity at the famed Lexington “Red Mile”, but Duke Rodney won the race in summary.
However, Caleb also turned in the year’s fastest trial time for hs age and sex on a half-mile track, 2:00-3/5.
Altogether, he won eight of 25 starts during the year, was second the same number of times and third thrice, to earn $114,063.
In addition to his excellent racing record, Caleb possesses a pedigree redolent of potential stud success. He is son of Hoot Mon 3, 2:00, a son of Scotland, out of Columbia Hanover 2, 2:03-1/5; 3, 2:02, winner of the Hanover Shoe Filly Stake t two.
Caleb’s first foals, from a limited season of approval mares, will arrive in 1963
