DECIDEDLY, gr. c., 1959, by Determine – Gloire Fille, by War Glory. Breeder, George A. Pope, Jr.; owner, El Peco Ranch; trainer, Horatio A. Luro.

In the long history of the Kentucky Derby, stretching back to 1875, only two gray horses have won the Louisville classic. The first was the tiny Determine in 1954; the second was his son, the record-breaking Decidedly, in 1962.

Out of the War Glory mare Gloire Fille, full sister to the minor stakes winner War Marshal, Decidedly ws foaled at George A. Pope, Jr.’s El Peco Ranch, Madera, Calif. The colt proved rather obstreperous as a two-year-old, so Mr. Pope put him under the care of Horatio A. Luro, an Argentine trainer noted for his skill with hard-to-handle horses.

Decidedly won two of eight juvenile starts and $7,550, but performed well enough to be rated at 110 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap.

But Decidedly took a back seat to nobody in the Derby. Coming from far back with a strong stretch drive on the outside, he won by 2 ¼ lengths over Roman Line and Ridan in 2:00 2/5, chopping a full second off the Churchill Downs 1 ¼-mile record set by the great Whirlaway in 1941.

He won his first 1962 start, an allowance race at Hialeah Park in February. Then he racked up three straight seconds behind leading classic candidates; Sir Gaylord beat him by 4 ¾ lengths in the Everglades Stakes, Roman Line out-finished him by five lengths while equaling the track record in an overnight race at Keeneland, and Ridan scored over him by four lengths in the Blue Grass Stakes.

By the end of the season, Decidedly had accumulated a lifetime income of $151,880 from four wins, five seconds and two thirds in 20 starts.
